Trigger Points are painful areas of muscle that are tender and may feel like tight bands or knots when pressed. Pressing on the trigger point will “trigger” pain at the area of pressure and often in other areas. This is called referral pain. For example, pressing on a trigger point at the top of the shoulder may send pain down the arm or up into the neck.

Trigger points are overactive muscle areas that can come from stress, using the muscle too much, or problems with the spine or posture. Typically, trigger points are treated with massage or myofascial release.

Sometimes these knots are too deep or too painful to be relieved by manual pressure so your doctor may order a Trigger Point Injection. A trigger point injection is an outpatient procedure designed to reduce or relieve the back pain caused by trigger points.

TPI Therapy is used to treat many muscle groups, especially those in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. In addition, TPIs can be used to treat fibromyalgia , migraines and tension headaches. The technique is also used to alleviate myofascial pain syndrome (chronic pain involving tissue that surrounds muscle) that does not respond to other treatments.

After injuring my low back (disc herniation) in the Marine Corps 28 years ago, I refused surgery at the Naval hospital, and the med board accepted a package to end my military career.

I found myself seeking treatment from the same chiropractor I saw as a high school athlete, and as fate would have it, he was also a Marine from the Vietnam era. Well, lo and behold, he single-handedly restored me to 100% peak performance.

I never had to have the surgery that was recommended by the Naval doctors. I was so inspired by what happened that I quickly set my sights on helping other people as he had helped me.

No harmful drugs or unnecessary surgery was needed for me to experience a complete recovery, and I knew providing effective care with a great patient outcome was my calling.

Since that time, I’ve earned 2 Bachelor of Science degrees (Physiology and Human Biology) and a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree.

I have completed adventure races, marathons, and I live a healthy, active lifestyle—one that I think so many people are robbed of when they get addicted to pain pills and areas of the body become compromised by unnecessary surgical procedures, like the one that the Naval medical board had recommended for me.

I made a promise to myself that I would do everything in my power to make sure that no one I came into contact with would go down that preventable path—a path of side effects due to needless, over-prescribed medication and surgeries that often never work and leave many people in worse condition than before.

We started Precision Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine to give Arizonans a look at what medicine can be. Here, patients don’t fall through the cracks or get pulled in a million different directions. I wanted to create a place where doctors work together for the good of the patient.

I wanted a friendly and effective place where doctors from different fields combine forces to fix the cause of health issues and teach patients about real, preventative healthcare.
